The Telluric Earth

Electromagnetism is witchy. And probably the oldest witchcraft if pseudoarcheology is to be believed. If you had ever used a divining rod (or witching stick, dowsing) to search for things in the earth then you know what I mean. That an operation as simple as walking and holding a Y shaped stick can, through “unconscious muscular action,” respond to changes in the magnetic field, indicting underground features whether they be water, cables, iron, or energetic boundaries, is a basic human sensitivity weird enough to snarl up science and boggle the mind. I’ve done it and It boggles my mind. As ancient civilization understood, this is the power of the telluric earth. While we comprehend how this electromagnetic magic works enough to make it power our modern life, we still little understand it. From the sheer ignorance of our layman position we can propose a mythic speculation that the ancient mineral body of earth is a living being; the planet is alive and its blood is electricity. The lifespan of this being is on a time-scale beyond anything humans can think of. The ground, as everyone knows, is subsequent to any electrical function. That ground is the telluric earth. Lightning, when it emerges from the storm clouds, returns to its home in the earth. Sometimes the earth produces lighting that travels to the sky. To attribute such power to the god Zeus—or any human god—is to deny the body and demean the earth; attributing power to fantasy, as opposed to the impossible facts of lighting, storm and the giant object that is the planet. When you leap up from this object it is the mass of 7900 miles of spherical rock and molten heavy metals that pull you back to the ground. The magnetic fields produced by this mass have been charted by ancient peoples; ley lines, song lines, dragon lines, fairy paths and spirit roads are all old and various global descriptors of the boundaries of these fields; Science refers to such phenomena as “conductivity discontinuities.” Their intersections often correspond to sites of sacred architecture, what the Celts called thin places, or what the Greeks called the omphalos, the navel of the world. Such phenomena makes little sense to modern minds but our contemporary practices of both yoga and tai-chi were originally conceived of as telluric, regarding the human as an antenna, an instrument of sensitivity channeling prana or chi, the geomagnetic dynamo of the living telluric earth.
