Nick Bostrom’s Paperclip Apocalypse
Grand AI philosopher and super-wonk Nick Bostrom has expressed the dangers of AI with this thought experiment in which a superintelligent recursive machine has been given the command to make paper clips. The dutiful machine, far more intelligent and resourceful than any human, systematically begins to repurpose all of society, even while bringing about the destruction of the biosphere in the pursuit of paperclip manufacturing. Soon the planet is flooded with paperclips and life on earth comes to an end, drowned in a sea of paperclips. Is this not an accurate description of capitalism itself?
