The Gender Catastrophe Already Happened

Jean Laplanche makes the point that gender assignment at birth is no different from “the assignment to membership in a religion.” Thinking of the now weaponized concept of gender as a religion, as apposed to one of necessity, or even worse, biology, alerts us to a few features of the church of gender that are important to recognize: gender is contingent upon belief, it is metaphysical, it serves too neatly orthodox religion—with its father-god top-down hierarchy—it is structured along rigid and yet totally arbitrary notions of good and evil. In fact, we may as well assert that the Christian religion is nothing less than the man/wife gender binary projected upon the sky, enforced by the early-modern witchhunts (that have not ended), ratified into law by the state, and now known everywhere as what is normal. The fact of anatomy has become proof of heaven’s paternal mandate. Freud’s notion that “anatomy is destiny”—weirdly attributed to Napoleon?—pertains here as case in point but with this clarification, it is a contrived destiny, one that we are all asked, or forced (depending on where you live) to consent to from day one; it is the original matrix.
