Tantric Jesus
The evangelicals are not ready for Tantric Jesus.
The left-hand path, familiar in India as the very old and complex system of Tantrism by which sex is made a spiritual practice, is not only confined to the east, but is now appearing in Christianity too, perhaps retroactively—a kind of cultural nachträglichkeit. A new character is emerging at the esoteric margins of western religion: the Jesus who fucks. Emerging likewise is Mary Magdalene; once accused of harlotry by a 6th century pope, now absolved, she is once more endowed with sexuality—but not just any sexuality, in the left-hand path she is Kundalini-Shakti. In this view (supported, in part, by the gnostic gospels) Mary Magdalene was “the apostle to the apostles,” understood the lord’s “feminine” teachings better than anyone else, and nor did she abandon him at crucifixion. For Mary was not only married to Jesus, but had initiated him into sacred sexual practices through which sexual energy is generated for building a mystical second body that can withstand death. Christ’s resurrection from the tomb is this second-body, made of pure orgasmic energy produced by Mary Magdalene. I’m not making this up. Wilhelm Reich claimed that all mystical experience is due to the misinterpretation of sexual feeling. The left-hand path makes this claim literal: sexual experience is the mystical. But it is just this kind of mystical experience that Christianity denies; Jesus was incarnate, but not carnal; the sexual purity of Christ is a necessary doctrine for the repressive apparatus of the church. If all repression is sexual and the repressed is, for lack of a better word, the feminine, then we may view the bad old sky-cult of Christianity as just that: an elaborate means of repression; a recoil from the excesses of the female body and the earth. For—the sex-life of the son of God not-withstanding—is not the true heresy of the left-hand path the power of the female orgasm itself?
