Driving to Enlightenment

While you may become angry and honk your horn at the reckless driver who cuts you off in traffic, assuming that you are two isolated agents in your sealed tins, separate and opposed, from the perspective of nonduality you are not two but one; you are the traffic. Driving is mystical and leads to enlightenment when you become aware that you and the other driver that you hate, along with every other driver in the traffic jam, all of the cars, the exhaust, the oil industry, the heavy metal mines, global warming, all roadkill and every single highway fatality, are one and the same. Easier said than done for the entire fantasy of driving is contingent upon the unitary illusion that each individual is alone on the open road, as depicted in many car commercials.

Double Standard, 1961, Dennis Hopper
