2012 (2012)

Every year that passes makes this title more banal. The title, in all of its apocalyptic banality, is the movie’s best part. Otherwise the movie has all of the aesthetic power of a bag of 3D Doritos. That Hollywood could get so much star power to appear in this trash is a testimony to the end-times of cinema. Never mind airplane flights through an LA collapsing into the sea, nor tidal waves engulfing the Himalayas, nothing actually happens in this movie. It is a fantasy, preying upon actual fears and yet offering no relief, nor any critique. The end of the world is now a series of memes in total denial that the world has already ended. We need more movies about the beginning of the world.
